Die Punks schrieben ein bizarres Kapitel der DDR-Geschichte. Der Tumult, den sie in der DDR veranstalteten, forderte einen Disziplinarstaat heraus, der seine Jugend steuern wollte, von dem sich eine Minderheit aber nicht lenken ließ. Das aufgeladene Verhältnis zwischen Punks und Partei beruhte auf der Spannung zwischen Subkultur und Diktatur. Die Verachtung der Punks richtete sich gegen eine Musterutopie, welche die Zukunft für alle Zeiten festschrieb. Ihr „No Future“ hieß „Too Much Future“.
Die Compilation „Too Much Future“ versammelt ausschließlich ehemals illegale Bands, die ohne staatliche Spielerlaubnis bewusst Underground waren. Einige von ihnen spielten nie vor Publikum. Die Bands, die gelegentlich live zu sehen waren, traten konspirativ auf. Etliche Musiker wurden anschließend drangsaliert, inhaftiert und zu Gefängnisstrafen verurteilt.
Auf der Compilation sind 38 Punkrockbands der DDR zu hören. Viele dieser Bands sind bis heute einer größeren Hörerschaft unbekannt, oder ihre Namen waren bisher nur als Gerücht im Umlauf. Neben einigen Klassikern des DDR-Punkrock veröffentlicht „Too Much Future“ vor allem Bands oder Songs, die aufgrund teils jahrelanger Recherchen zum ersten Mal zu hören sind.
Die Compilation erscheint auf Vinyl, funktioniert durch ein umfangreiches, ca. 100 Seiten starkes Booklet aber auch als Buch. Der Autor Henryk Gericke widmet jeder Band einen ausführlichen Text. Den Texten werden zahlreiche Fotos zur Seite gestellt.
Die beiden Herausgeber der Compilation waren Teil der frühen DDR-Punkszene. Maik „Ratte“ Reichenbach spielte Bass in der Leipziger Punkband H.A.U. und in der Punkrocklegende L'Attentat. Henryk Gericke sang in der Ostberliner Punkband The Leistungsleichen.
L'Attentat wird zur Record Release im Berliner Lido ein letztes Konzert zu spielen.
The punks wrote a bizarre chapter in GDR's history. The row they raised, provoked a disciplinary state intent to control its youth, but whose leadership had no effect on a minority. The highly charged relationship between punks and party was based on the tension between subculture and despotism. The punks' contempt was directed at an exemplary utopia, which tried to establish the future, for good. Their "No Future" was called "Too Much Future".
The compilation "Too Much Future" exclusively assembles formerly illegal bands, which did not have the state's permit to play and were consciously underground. Some of them never played in front of a crowd. The bands one could catch live once in a while, performed in a conspirative manner. Quite a few musicians were harassed, taken into custody, sentenced and imprisoned, afterwards.
The compilation features 38 East German punk rock bands. To this day, many of them are unknown to a larger audience, or their names have only been rumoured about. Besides some classics of GDR punk rock, "Too Much Future" mainly publishes bands which will be heard for the very first time, partly due to years of research.
The compilation is released on vinyl, though it also functions as a book, since the considerable booklet is about 100 pages strong. The author, Henryk Gericke, has dedicated an elaborate text to each band. The written work will be accompanied by several pictures.
Both publishers of the compilation were part of the early GDR punk scene. Maik "Ratte" Reichenbach used to play the bass for Leipzig punk band H.A.U. as well as for punk rock legends L'Attentat, while Henryk Gericke was the singer in the East Berlin punk band The Leistungsleichen.
L'Attentat will be playing one last concert, on the occasion of the record release at Berliner Lido.
